Symbian^4
Symbian^4 is the first release to be defined by the community process (councils, etc.) of the Symbian Foundation. In this sense, it can be seen as the first full release to fall completely under the auspices and planning of the Symbian Foundation and its members.

It is proposed that Qt 4.6 be fully integrated into the Symbian Platform. Further, a new 'Orbit' extension library for Qt, consisting of "more than 50 widgets tailored for mobile user experience" will replace the AVKON UI layer of previous releases; along with this is 'Direct UI' interaction and logic. Together, these also mean a rewrite of the application suite to take advantage of "Qt APIs, Orbit widgets, and Direct UI". Initially this would be for touch and hybrid devices, but this will likely change in future Symbian releases.

This means we will see Symbian^4 ship with a new UI for touch-enabled and hybrid devices based on the Qt framework. The engineering effort for this will be carried out by Nokia. Clearly there will be something of a compatibility break for applications, but, at this early stage, it is too soon to assess their impact (e.g. we could see an AVKON to Orbit compatibility bridge).

Nor does it preclude another company or Symbian Foundation contributor creating an alternative application framework and UI layer (e.g for low end mobile phones or non-mobile phone devices).

Symbian ^4 will be functionally complete around the middle of 2010 and will be hardened by early 2011. This means it will be available in devices in 2011.

It is worth pointing out that Symbian^4 is still being roadmapped and specified, which means the proposals above have not been formally accepted.

Symbian^3
Symbian^3, in many ways, is the first Symbian Foundation release that fulfills the vision of the Symbian Foundation. Most, if not all, of the code will be available under EPL. This release will see Screenplay graphics, Open acceleration and improved multi screen support.

Symbian^3 incorporates the technologies that Symbian have previously promoted as Freeway and Screenplay. These consist of a 'high performance communications architecture' (including true seamless handover between different bearers) and 'support for seamless composition of hardware-accelerated content into UI elements' (including layered graphics and much improved graphics performance) respectively.

720p HD video recording, HDMI output, textual location-tagging (GPS co-ordinates translated into country-street-city), multi-channel audio, and many other features will all become fully integrated into the platform.

It should be noted that any of these components or features can appear in earlier devices - manufacturers can add custom code and functionality. Indeed this is likely to be a common occurrence. Manufacturers may typically choose to test an addition in their own devices (and use it as a way to differentiate from their competitors) before contributing the necessary enablers to the Symbian Foundation.

Symbian^3 will be functionally complete by week 4, 2010 and will be hardened by week 26. This means is will be available in devices in the second half of next year.

Pues su esta muerto, en el symbian ^3 apenas incluye la salida de HDMI y la Grabación en este, lo cual ya existen móviles que graban en este momento en HD.

Nokia Y Symbian, se están alentando, además de que el apogeo de symbian^3 este en el segundo semestre del 2010, por que lleva, ya habrá muchos móviles que incorporen estos puertos.

Delo que dice ISHITH, se me ocurrió, por que no crear un post en cual diga:

Al igual que ISHITH me quedo con maemo, es este momento.

Para cuando salga el Symbian^5, Android tendrá su version 4.0 y ya habrá un iPhone 4

Joder con el Symbian... llevan años que si sacaran esto, que si lo otro... Android ha sido como una sorpresa, y Apple tardó pocos meses en sacar el iPhone trás los rumores y pre-anuncios...

Como siempre, dónde esté Nokia, hay muchoooo tiempo de antesala..., tocar mucho el bombo antes que empieze el partido

Hombre, el Symbian tuvo el s60v1- s60v2 - s60v3...... y el fracasado UIQ. Y els60v5, que la verdad no le veo nada nuevo relevante, salvo que son para tactiles

Symbian ha avanzada a paso de caracol durante todos estos años... además... nunca competió directamente con Windows Mobile... porque ese era unn S.O orientado a lo profesional, y de experiencia en tactil tiene mucho.

Symbian lo he visto siempre como un S.O para moviles que otorga más posibilidades que los demás.

No me entendiste n80 o no me di a entender bien.

Lo que digo, es que lar versiones del symbian actual no han tenido un cambio mayor. La version 3. la 5a. edicion, la version 2, la 1, etc.

No hay un cambio exagerado entre estas,

casi casi viene siendo lo mismo,

Queda claro que symbian su lado fuerte y duro va hacer con la symbian fundation, la s^3, la s^4, etc.

Android, no tiene muchos realces todavía, pero aseguro que cuando lancen la versión S^4 android estará por las nubes.

Ah vale, no te habia entendido..

si ,tienes razon en lo que dices... las de ahora de la 1 a la 2 etc pues son mejoras.. pero es de suponer que con el SF sobre todo a partir de la S^4 si que hay un gran cambio respecto a lo actual

here's some interesting stuff I've managed to find there:

The good stuff:
•Small form factor 800x480 screen – seems like no more devices with less than WVGA screen resolution anymore;
No mini size low resolution screen – goodbye to 240х320 screens;
Takes advantage of device's multimedia capabilities including DSP all device connectivity features – looks like the dedicated sound processor won't go anywhere;
•WLAN, Bluetooth and WiMAX connectivity – at last there won't be no devices, lacking WiFi;
•Accelerated graphics with OpenGL-ES2
•As new feature, Qt 4.5 has native OpenGL-ES2.0 support – resurrection to devices with dedicated GPU;
•Hardware accelerated OpenGL-ES2.0 in Omap3 based devices – confirmed about the GPUs. I wish they wouldn't be limited with software;
•OpenGL ES 2.0 is based on OpenGL 2.0, so using programmable shaders is mandatory, since all old fixed function API's have been removed (the latest opengl version);
•Omap3 architecture – goodbye to weak CPUs;
•HSPA ( High Speed Packet Access / Cellular 3G connectivity ) - former internet tablets will have phone capabilities. Just missing the HSPA speeds;
•Vibra service: methods for triggering and controlling vibrations. - maybe that's the vibra screen feedback (but that's not new);
•Device orientation: respond to changes in orientation and discover current orientation – no more devices lacking accelometer (it tends to be that way for a long time now);
some about Qt crossplatforming:
•!!!Same applications will run with no modifications or just small changes in S60 but also in Desktop Linux Macintosh, Windows and even Windows mobile – the only missed thing is whether this works for nokia software only or for any maemo software;
•Tablet has hardware menu button, keycode as F4 – no more “buttonless” popular devices. At least, hardware menu key guranteed

Otra cosa, que me cuestiono mucho,

que va a pasar con todos esos usuarios que tiene S60 versión 3, 2, o 1 incluso.

serán compatibles los datos, aplicaciones, juegos, etc.

No le pasara lo mismo como si vista-XP

Que vaya que tienen sus diferencias.

Le sonrie un futuro muy grande a maemo, al igual la SF

Ya rompieron compatibilidad con s60v1/2 y total en las s60v3 de las anteriores...

Si Maemo 5 será compatible con Symbian... pero, ¿Cual, el actual?... me conformo que mantengan la compatibilidad con Maemo 4

. En symbian no hay nada relevante comparando con Maemo

Por cierto.. ¿no hay nada de JAVA en Maemo 5? Nohe visto que lo citen

Por cierto, me encata la nueva interfaz de escritorio de Maemo 5, se asemeja mucho a un S.O de escritorio...
